Zacariah ‘Zach’ Farmer was born in Shelburne, Nova Scotia on June 6th, 1896.  His father was Doran Farmer, a seaman and fisherman. His mother was Florence ‘Bertha’, whose maiden name was also ‘Farmer.’  He had two siblings, Everett Chestwin Farmer, born in 1902 and described by one source as his ‘half-brother’, and Robert Gordon Farmer [b 1903].  The 1901, 1911 and 1921 Census all indicate that Zach lived with his grandmother, Sarah Farmer, and various aunts and cousins in Shelburne.  

The 1921 Census shows that he was a stevedore and Bertha was a washerwoman. 

The registry of deaths for Queen’s County [Shelburne West] indicates that Arthur Farmer, ‘Soldier’ and cousin to Zachariah Farmer died on March 19th, 1919.  The cause of death was given by a coroner’s jury as ‘Accidental Shooting… Died Immediately.’   

Arthur had been sharing a room with his cousin.  Zachariah testified that Arthur had been playing with a loaded revolver and that it went off.  However, the Shelburne police were suspicious of Zach’s account and continued to visit him over the next few weeks. Finally, Zachariah admitted "I was fooling with the revolver, she went off and Arthur fell. I was so frightened; I didn't know what to do.'' Zachariah was charged with the murder of Arthur Farmer but on June 11th, 1919 was acquitted because there were no witnesses to confirm or deny his version of the killing

Sometime after 1921, Zacariah Farmer married Ida Belle Hartley.  They had daughter Annie Alberta who was born on December 2, 1923, in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  Zachariah, was 27 and Ida  was 21. Three years later their son Lloyd Alfred was born in 1926 but the exact date of their marriage is unknown. 

In 1932 Zach Farmer spent three months in jail for making home-brewed whiskey and eight months for bootlegging. 

On August 1st, 1937, Zach Farmer visited his brother Everett, as was his custom.  Both men drank heavily and eventually Zach insulted Everett, calling him a ‘liar’ and suggesting that his wife had been unfaithful.  Everett ordered Zach to leave the house but Zach refused. Each man threatened to kill the other. Everett grabbed a shotgun and fired at Zachariah, hitting him in the neck and killing him. Everett turned himself in to the police, arguing that he was simply defending his family, but he was tried for murder on September 28th, 1937.  The jury found him guilty in fifty-five minutes.  No appeal was launched and on Dec. 14, 1937, Everett was hanged. He was the last person to be executed in Nova Scotia.

Zacariah Farmer was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Shelburne.

Le recensement de 1921 montre qu’il travaillait comme débardeur et que Bertha était blanchisseuse. Le registre des décès du comté de Queen [Shelburne Ouest] indique qu’Arthur Farmer, « soldat » et cousin de Zachariah Farmer, est décédé le 19 mars 1919. La cause du décès, selon le jury du coroner, fut un « tir accidentel… mort immédiate ».

Arthur partageait une chambre avec son cousin. Zachariah a témoigné qu’Arthur jouait avec un revolver chargé lorsque celui-ci s’est déclenché. Cependant, la police de Shelburne doutait de cette version et continua de rendre visite à Zach pendant plusieurs semaines. Finalement, Zachariah a avoué : « Je jouais avec le revolver, il est parti et Arthur est tombé. J’étais tellement effrayé que je ne savais pas quoi faire. » Zachariah fut inculpé du meurtre d’Arthur Farmer, mais le 11 juin 1919, il fut acquitté, faute de témoins pour confirmer ou infirmer sa version des faits.

Quelque temps après 1921, Zacariah Farmer épousa Ida Belle Hartley. Ils eurent une fille, Annie Alberta, née le 2 décembre 1923 à Shelburne, Nouvelle-Écosse. Zachariah avait alors 27 ans et Ida 21 ans. Trois ans plus tard, leur fils Lloyd Alfred naquit en 1926, mais la date exacte de leur mariage demeure inconnue.

En 1932, Zach Farmer passa trois mois en prison pour avoir fabriqué du whisky artisanal et huit mois pour contrebande d’alcool.

Le 1er août 1937, Zach Farmer rendit visite à son frère Everett, comme à son habitude. Les deux hommes burent abondamment, et Zach finit par insulter Everett, le traitant de « menteur » et suggérant que sa femme avait été infidèle. Everett ordonna à Zach de quitter la maison, mais ce dernier refusa. Chacun menaça alors de tuer l’autre. Everett saisit un fusil de chasse et tira sur Zachariah, le touchant au cou et le tuant sur le coup. Everett se livra à la police, affirmant qu’il avait simplement défendu sa famille, mais il fut jugé pour meurtre le 28 septembre 1937. Le jury le déclara coupable après cinquante-cinq minutes de délibération. Aucun appel ne fut interjeté, et le 14 décembre 1937, Everett fut pendu. Il fut la dernière personne exécutée en Nouvelle-Écosse.

Zacariah Farmer fut inhumé au cimetière Pine Grove, à Shelburne.
