Sergeant Albert Edwin Cyril Cumberbatch (Service Number: SG 11309) was born on April 9, 1921, in Georgetown, British Guiana. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on March 22, 1952, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. A skilled cook, he was praised for his leadership and professionalism, earning promotions while serving in Korea and later Japan. He was awarded the Korea Medal and the United Nations Service Medal Korea.

While stationed in Japan, Cumberbatch met and married Mitsuko Morikawa, a Hiroshima survivor and Red Cross translator. However, on June 28, 1954, he fell ill with a high fever and died days later from septicemia. His wife, pregnant at the time, later gave birth to a daughter who tragically did not survive. Mitsuko became the first Japanese national to receive the Memorial Cross in honor of her husband’s service.

Mitsuko later remarried an American soldier, Moritz Friebel, and moved to the U.S., where she raised a family and became an artist. Though she distanced herself from her past, her experiences of war, loss, and survival shaped her life. She passed away in Japan in 1995 due to cancer, likely linked to radiation exposure from the Hiroshima bombing. Her legacy continues through her children and grandchildren.
