Sergeant Joseph Roger Butler was born in Richmond, Virginia, USA on November 22, 1878.
Butler served with the 9th Cavalry during the Spanish American War (1898 - 1901) and also served with the 25th Infantry for four years before emigrating to Canada. He first settled in Calgary.
On January 14th, 1916 when he was working as a baker, he contacted military officials stating he wanted to serve Canada in the First World War and “that with a little schooling in new methods” he “would make an efficient officer.” And “could recruit many eligible colored men.”
Officials did not accept his offer.
Several months later, Roger enlisted with No. 2 Construction Battalion at Edmonton on September 17, 1916, with the rank of Corporal. He served with the unit in France, where he was promoted to Sergeant in July 1917. During service abroad, Butler sent portions of his pay to his wife Mary and their three children.
After the war, Roger relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he married a second time and raised three sons. Sgt. Joseph Roger Butler died in Winnipeg on June 12, 1939.

Plusieurs mois plus tard, le 17 septembre 1916, à Edmonton, Roger s'enrôle dans le 2e Bataillon de construction avec le grade de caporal. Il sert avec cette unité en France, où il est promu sergent en juillet 1917. Pendant son service militaire à l'étranger, Butler envoie une partie de sa solde à sa femme Mary et à leurs trois enfants.
Après la guerre, Roger s'installe à Winnipeg, au Manitoba, où il se marie une seconde fois et élevé trois fils. Le sergent Joseph Roger Butler meurt le 12 juin 1939, à Winnipeg.
